The school community had a great celebration day with the help of a birds of prey display from Colin Travers and facepainting. This was followed by presentations by the children of the work they had undertaken over the past two years, before raising their Fifth Green Flag in glorious sunshine in front of the school. They had composed poems and a rap especially for the occasion. Refreshments were enjoyed by all and the children played their tin whistles and flutes throughout to complement the ceremony.
Huge thanks to all the school staff for coordinating the above activities, and the Board of Management and Parents Association for all their support. Thanks to Cliona Connolly in Wexford County Council for her support throughout the process. The biggest thank you must go to the children, without whom this project would never have come to fruition, a particular thank you to the Greenschool’s Committee.
Many action plans were put in place to attain this flag:-
The school began the process by raising awareness of biodiversity in our school and in our homes. Posters and art work was completed and displayed throughout the school. A biodiversity study was completed in the school and maps were drawn in accordance with this. A bio-divesity workshop took place when a Bee-Keeper visited the school and help to establish a solitary bee box and informed the children of the importance of encouraging bees into our garden. Following this a sunflower and wild flower garden was planted. Window boxes adorn the windows of the school, in the sunshine. A bird box was erected in the school grounds also. As part of the action plan, the school also visited the Altamount Gardens to celebrate biodiversity on National Tree day.
We now look forward to beginning work on our sixth green flag.
